Attentive to Klaviyo: a migration checklist.

Moving SMS is the part people worry about, and for good reason. Here's the checklist I use so subscribers come over with their consent intact and nothing sends twice.

Plenty of Shopify brands run email in Klaviyo and SMS in Attentive. Moving everything into Klaviyo puts your segments, flows, and reporting in one place. The work is in the details, especially around SMS consent.

This is a practical checklist, not legal advice. If you have questions about SMS compliance for your business, talk to your attorney.

Before you start

  • Check your contract dates. Know when your Attentive term ends and how much notice it needs. Plan the cutover a few weeks before that.
  • List everything Attentive does today. Every journey, signup unit, keyword, and integration. Screenshots help.
  • Note how consent was collected. Which forms, which wording, and which keywords people used to opt in.

Subscribers and consent

  • Export SMS subscribers with phone numbers, opt-in dates, and source where available.
  • Export unsubscribes and suppressions too. People who opted out must stay opted out in Klaviyo.
  • Import SMS subscribers into Klaviyo with consent recorded, following Klaviyo's import steps for existing SMS subscribers.
  • Spot-check a handful of profiles after import to confirm email and SMS consent look right.

Flows and messages

  • Rebuild your SMS journeys as Klaviyo flows. Most map to welcome, browse, cart, checkout, and post-purchase.
  • Decide which messages should be email, SMS, or both, instead of copying everything one to one.
  • Add filters so people in an Attentive journey don't also enter the matching Klaviyo flow during the overlap.
  • Send test profiles through every flow before you turn anything on.

Forms and keywords

  • Build Klaviyo signup forms to replace each Attentive unit, with compliant SMS consent language.
  • Set up your keywords in Klaviyo, including STOP and HELP responses.
  • Plan to switch forms on the store the same day you turn off Attentive's signup units.

Cutover day

  1. Turn off Attentive signup units and turn on Klaviyo forms.
  2. Pause Attentive journeys and turn on the matching Klaviyo flows.
  3. Run a final export of anyone who subscribed or unsubscribed since the first import, and bring those changes over.
  4. Send yourself a test signup and walk through the welcome flow on your own phone.

The first two weeks

  • Watch SMS unsubscribe and failure rates daily.
  • Compare flow revenue to what Attentive reported, knowing the two platforms count revenue differently.
  • Keep Attentive access until the contract ends in case you need another export.

Taking on new brands

Send me your store. I'll send back what I'd fix first.

Share your Shopify URL and a line about what's going on. I'll look through the site and your email program before we talk, so the first call gets somewhere.
